Delhi Riots Case: Ex-JNU Student Umar Khalid Arested Under UAPA | News

Special Cell investigating Delhi violence has arrested Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) former student Umar Khalid under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

A few minutes after the news of Khalid’s arrest came, the hashtag “StandwithUmarKhalid” trended on Twitter.

Khalid’s father Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas said, he was arrested around 11 pm on Sunday night. The arrest has also been confirmed by Delhi Police high-ranking officials.

“My son Umar Khalid has been arrested tonight at 11:00 pm by Special Cell, Delhi Police under UAPA. Police was questioning him since 1:00 pm. He has been implicated in Delhi Riots,” Khalid’s father tweeted.

The Special Cell has registered a case under UAPA against eight people, including Khalid, in the Delhi violence case and there are many serious charges including murder, attempt to murder, treason, and riot against all.

While according to The Indian Express, Khalid’s lawyer Trideep Pais had said on Saturday that the allegations against Khalid were “completely false, fabricated and procured illegally through duress”.

Let us tell you that Khalid has also been questioned twice by the Special Cell team. The first time he was questioned on July 31, when his mobile phone was also seized for investigation, while the second time he was questioned earlier this month.

“Kapil Mishra screamed ‘Goli Maaro’ in his hate speech which had a big role to play in the riots. Forget arrest or UAPA, there was not even a FIR against him. What has Umar Khalid done? BJP govt is purposefully hounding him. Will judiciary uphold liberty,” Former Karnataka Congress social media head Srivatsa said.
